Summary

Built at the beginning of the 2nd century AD. and discovered in 1996 during earthworks, the amphitheater of Nyon is the sixth amphitheater unearthed in Switzerland and one of the most remarkable for its size and good conservation.

To enhance this archaeological site, a scenography designed specifically inside the arena allows visitors to wander freely on the site and discover there, in the form of three unique VR experiences, several temporal and spatial realities of the place.

About the three VR experiences:
Noviodunum | Historical experience
Based on the historical reconstruction carried out by Archeodunum and the Roman Museum of Nyon, this first experience offers visitors the opportunity to enter the amphitheater of Nyon in its Roman era.

Julius II Project | Architectural experience
In 2002, an international architectural competition was launched to convert the site of the amphitheater into an archaeological visitation site open to the public. This experience allows you to discover the winning project designed by the architect Bernard Pahud.

Rêverie | Artistic experience
Like the imaginary world of a child, participants are immersed in a fictional colorful illustration, where flora and fauna have reclaimed the remains of the amphitheater and the space occupied until today by humans.

The exhibition was open on October 3rd and 4th 2020 inside the Roman Amphitheater, Nyon.

Summary

Have you ever dreamed of time traveling to another era? This is the experience we proposed to realize in partnership with the City of Geneva with this virtual immersion into the Geneva of 1850.

Headset strapped to your head, movement sensors attached to your wrists and feet, you are now all geared up to dive into the Geneva 1850 experience. This VR installation immerses users into the Geneva of a time when the city was on the brink of modernity. In groups of four, impersonating period costume-clad avatars, users are given a chance to discover the city as it was in October 1846, just days before its people rose up in insurrection. Featuring a spectacular number of special effects, the experience is not only a visual, auditory and olfactory one. It also includes a physical and haptic dimension — users can feel themselves walking around the virtual city and pick up actual objects to interact with their environment, their fellow travelers and city dwellers.

Based on 3D data collected through the digitization of the Magnin model exhibited at Maison Tavel, this extraordinary experience is an invitation to travel back in time and witness the outbreak of Geneva’s “Fazy” revolution.

Originally exhibited from April 12th-July 14th, 2019 at Maison Tavel and from August 1st-September 29th, 2019 at the Museum of Art and History of Geneva.

Permanently exhibited at the Dreamscape center in Geneva, level-1 of Confederation Center. Check https://dreamscapegeneva.com/ for more information and to get tickets.

Summary

In 1864, Johannes Badrutt was the owner of the new Kulm Hotel St. Moritz. He was the first to bring winter tourists in the Alps to experience the white winter holiday, who expressed their inventiveness by introducing a host of new winter activities that included skiing, skating, and curling – all in the Kulm Park. Since then, St Moritz became the birthplace of winter sports. In this augmented reality (AR) application, Apelab brings Johannes Badrutt back to life who tells us his story and praises the alpine resort of St. Moritz.

For this project, we performed the full performance capture (body and face) and animation of the virtual Johannes Badrutt.

Summary

Magic Window is a choreographic piece in augmented reality (AR), created for the renovation of the Aula des Cèdres in Lausanne, Switzerland. Through screens of mobile phones or tablets, users can see the space of the Aula des Cèdres in direct but also virtual dancers embedded in the image and disseminated on the site.

For this piece, we created the 3D bodies of the dancers using body scanning technology, and we performed the motion capture and animation of the virtual dancers.

Dance piece in immersive VR

Summary

Blending art with technology, Gilles Jobin in collaboration with Artanim developed VR_I, a work in which the creator questions our perception of reality and enters new unexplored and unchartered territories for contemporary dance. Thanks to the virtual reality (VR) technology developed by Artanim, VR_I viewers equipped with VR headsets and backpack computers move freely in a total virtual space.

Five viewers at a time may explore this world, moving in turn in an endless desert, an urban landscape or inside a loft at the top of a mountain. Participants each embody an avatar that faithfully replicates their movements, enhancing the feeling of immersion in the virtual world while also enabling them to see their peers. During the experience, participants can thus interact physically and even communicate with the others. Five virtual dancers then come to blur their perception, multiplying, growing to the point of becoming giants or becoming tiny. With these effects of scale, Gilles Jobin addresses the concept of spatiality in a truly original way.

VR_I was selected at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and received, among others, the Grand Prix Innovation and the Audience Award for best performance at the 49th edition of the Festival du nouveau cinéma de Montréal. VR_I was on tour around the globe from 2017-2020.
