Summary

Basement Drawing is a VR artwork by Albert Oehlen that transports viewers into the artist’s creative process. Through a highly realistic avatar of Oehlen at work, the experience creates an encounter between artist and viewer while blurring the boundaries between physical and virtual space.

Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director at Serpentine, and developed with VIVE Arts and MacInnes Studio, the work is accompanied by music composed by Oehlen himself.

For Basement Drawing, Artanim performed the body motion capture of Albert Oehlen.

The VR work was presented at Art Basel in Basel from June 16 to June 19, 2022.

Summary

In November 1620, the passengers and crew of the Mayflower reached the coast of Massachusetts, where they established a new colony. Among them were Puritan Reformers seeking to build a community in accordance with their religious and political aspirations.

Aboard the Mayflower is a VR experience that transports visitors into the final moments of this historic voyage. The journey begins at Geneva’s Reformation Wall before taking participants aboard the Mayflower, where they witness discussions between the passengers and discover Cape Cod Bay from the upper deck of the ship.

Designed as a lightweight standalone VR installation using Oculus Quest, the experience combines historical reconstruction, storytelling and immersive technology to connect Geneva’s Reformation heritage with the voyage of the Mayflower.

Aboard the Mayflower was presented at the International Museum of the Reformation in Geneva from October 28, 2020, to August 31, 2021.

Summary

Built at the beginning of the 2nd century AD and discovered during excavation work in 1996, the Roman amphitheater of Nyon is the sixth amphitheater discovered in Switzerland and is remarkable for both its size and state of preservation.

Superimposed Realities is an immersive installation designed specifically for the archaeological site. Visitors move freely through the arena and discover three VR experiences that reveal different historical, architectural and imagined realities of the amphitheater.

Noviodunum — Historical Experience

Based on the historical reconstruction developed by Archeodunum and the Roman Museum of Nyon, Noviodunum transports visitors into the amphitheater during the Roman era.

Julius II Project — Architectural Experience

In 2002, an international architectural competition was launched to transform the amphitheater into an archaeological site accessible to the public. This experience allows visitors to explore the winning proposal designed by architect Bernard Pahud.

Rêverie — Artistic Experience

Rêverie immerses visitors in a colorful fictional world where flora and fauna reclaim the remains of the amphitheater and gradually transform a space traditionally occupied by humans.

Superimposed Realities was presented inside the Roman Amphitheater of Nyon on October 3 and 4, 2020.

Summary

Avenergy is an augmented reality experience designed to present Avenergy’s activities and interests in the energy sector through an interactive visualization of Switzerland.

Artanim developed the AR application for Microsoft HoloLens around a physical model of Switzerland that serves as both the spatial reference and the foundation of the virtual experience. Digital content is overlaid onto the model to reveal and contextualize different aspects of Avenergy’s activities.

The physical installation and AR experience were designed as the central element of Avenergy’s booth for the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show.

Summary

Geneva 1850 is a multi-user immersive VR experience that transports visitors to Geneva in October 1846, just days before the uprising that marks a turning point in the city’s political history.

In groups of four, participants embody period characters and freely explore the reconstructed city. The experience combines visual, spatial, auditory, olfactory and haptic elements: visitors walk physically through the virtual environment, interact with real objects and engage with fellow participants and virtual characters.

The historical environment is based on 3D data obtained from the digitization of the Relief Magnin exhibited at Maison Tavel, bringing the streets and architecture of 19th-century Geneva back to life.

Geneva 1850 was presented at Maison Tavel from April 12 to July 14, 2019, and at the Museum of Art and History of Geneva from August 1 to September 29, 2019. It was later presented at the Dreamscape center in Geneva from July, 1, 2022, to December 1, 2023.
