Summary

The shoulder has the widest range of motion of any joint in the body, but at the cost of inherent instability causing pain and functional disability. To better understand the mechanisms involved in shoulder stability, an in-depth analysis of the shoulder kinematics is instrumental. Therefore, the project aimed at developing a new kinematic model to reliably evaluate the three-dimensional motion of the shoulder based on motion capture. To set up and evaluate the kinematic model, a clinical study involving tennis players was performed.

The results opened up new possibilities to orthopedic surgeons in order to improve assessment and treatment of patients with shoulder functional abnormalities.

Dynamic planning for THA

Summary

MyHip aims at creating a complete solution for the planning and execution of total hip arthroplasty (THA). By considering preoperatively the kinematics of the prosthetic hip and pelvis tilting, accurately modeled from the patient morphology, a dynamic planning for THA can be defined. This novel planning provides operating parameters which aim to minimize the onset of articular conflicts and (sub-)luxations. Furthermore, the creation of intra-operative guidance tools for the faithful reproduction of the surgical planning strengthens this dynamic planning for THA.

In this project, Artanim was responsible for the development of the dynamic simulation module of the prosthetic hip driven by motion capture data.

Summary

Many patients wonder about the risks related to sexual activity after total hip arthroplasty (THA), but this issue remains rarely discussed between patients and surgeons. To date, the relative risk of prosthetic or bony impingement and joint instability during sexual activities after THA is unknown. Hip range of motion necessary to perform sexual positions has also never been quantified.

The goal of this study was to obtain realistic motion data for 12 common sexual positions and to evaluate relative risk of impingement and joint instability during their practice. We therefore conducted an in-vivo study with two volunteers using motion capture and magnetic resonance imaging. The data obtained were then used for computer simulations of prosthetic hip joint 3D models. Our aim was to provide surgeon or other healthcare professionals with scientifically validated information, as well as specific instructions to answer patient’s inquiries.
